BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College has hired Pat Deedy to be the institution’s Head Athletic Trainer as announced by Director of Athletics Sharief Hashim on Tuesday.

Deedy comes to SVC with a familiarity of the Green Mountain State after spending the 2016-17 academic year at Castleton University as the Spartans’ Assistant Athletic Trainer.

“Pat was a highly-recommended candidate and impressed during the interview process,” Hashim said. “His work ethic and commitment to the well-being of student-athletes make him an excellent choice to lead our athletic training team. We look forward to his enhancement of our health and wellness initiatives—including injury prevention and player development. We’re excited to welcome Pat to our athletic department and college community!”

Prior to working at Castleton, Deedy was a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at the State University of New York at Cortland from August 2014-June 2016 while garnering his Master of Science in Exercise Science degree. Before graduating from Cortland in May 2016, Deedy was an instructor at the school for a Responding to Emergencies lab during the Spring 2015 semester.

Additionally, Deedy collected teaching experience at Marist College in the 2013-14 academic year when he was a senior in the institution’s Athletic Training program; he graduated with his bachelor’s from Marist in May 2014 while also receiving a minor in Psychology.

“I'm excited and honored by the opportunity to work at SVC,” Deedy said. “I’d like to thank Sharief and [SVC] President [David] Evans for giving me this opportunity. I’d also like to thank my friends, family, and [my girlfriend] Sarah for supporting me in pursuing this job and in the move to Vermont. I look forward to getting to know all the staff, faculty, and student-athletes at SVC.”

Deedy has been a certified athletic trainer since April 2014 and has held a Vermont athletic training license since July 2016. He became a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Massachusetts Athletic Trainers’ Association in 2012 before garnering membership to the Vermont Athletic Trainers’ Association in 2016.

The new Southern Vermont ATC will oversee athletic training operations for all 12 of the College’s varsity programs. He will also supervise and work with SVC Assistant Athletic Trainer Becca Swart—a 2016 recipient of Castleton’s Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree.

“I'm excited to work with all the athletic programs and to do my best to help student-athletes reach their academic and athletic goals,” Deedy added. “I think Becca has done a phenomenal job running the Athletic Training Department, and I look forward to working with her and growing the program so that we can better serve the Athletics Department.”

Outside of athletic training, Deedy enjoys being outdoors and staying active. He is an avid runner, skier, biker, and hiker. He was a four-year member of the cross country and track programs at his alma mater and is currently training for marathons.
