SVC Announces New Appointments in Athletics

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southern Vermont College (SVC) President David R. Evans has announced the appointment of Sharief Hashim as the College’s Interim Director of Athletics, as well as an expanded role for Ashley Hodges, SVC’s current Assistant Director of Athletics.

Hashim has worked in many capacities since he arrived at SVC in 2013, most notably as the Athletics Liaison for Admissions and Admissions Counselor. He has also served as Head Coach of the junior varsity men’s basketball team and as Assistant Coach for the College’s varsity squad.

Hashim and Hodges will now share responsibilities for managing SVC’s overall athletic program. Hodges, who served as Head Athletic Trainer at the College since 2009 before being named to her current role, has been the senior woman administrator for the Athletics Department since 2010.

“Sharief has a track record as a versatile and accomplished leader and manager, both in coaching and in admissions, and is highly respected by the SVC community, as is Ashley, who has had a vital role in caring for student-athletes and in a number of critical programs and events,” said President Evans. “They will make a great team to help our coaches and student-athletes reach an even higher degree of success in athletics and all of their endeavors.”

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” Hashim said. “I’m a firm believer that positive energy, attitude, and passion are characteristics that fuel performance and dictate success on the playing surface and in the classroom.”

Hashim came to Bennington from the Greater Washington area where he was Head Coach for the varsity boys’ basketball team at Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Md. He was the recipient of the 2013 National Association of Counties’ Achievement Award for the Montgomery County government--in part for his work in supporting a successful partnership with high school students and U.S. Navy Seals.

Hashim has a master’s degree in Sports Management with an Athletic Administration certificate from Southern New Hampshire University and a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management with a Counseling Psychology minor from Columbia Union College. He is a graduate of the NCAA Division III Institute for Administrative Advancement.

Hodges has seen her role at the College grow immensely since 2009, as part of numerous committees at both SVC and the NCAA level. She was part of SVC’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee, and she chaired the Search Committee for the College’s Vice President and Dean of Admissions.

Hodges holds a master’s degree in Adult Learning and Organizational Performance with a concentration in Human Resources from Drake University and a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in athletic training from Iowa State University. Hodges is licensed by the State of Vermont, is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification, is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and is a certified professional rescuer.
