Barahona Concludes Play with USA DIII Team - Brazil Tour 2014

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Seizing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, former Southern Vermont College men’s volleyball outside hitter Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, California) recently completed his play with USA DIII Men’s Volleyball Team – Brazil Tour 2014, getting a chance to play against strong competition around the country as well as soak up its culture over the span of a week.

Barahona’s squad finished the trip with a 3-2 record, playing teams of varying levels including Brasil Kirin, a semi-pro team from the city of Campinas. The USA DIII crew additionally spent time in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro during the tour.

“Brazil was a sublime experience,” said Barahona, “from the wonderful cities in Sao Paulo, to the paradise beaches within Rio. Words are not enough to describe my participation in this volleyball tour.”

In-between matches, Barahona and his teammates had the opportunity to enjoy authentic Brazilian cuisine, visit the country’s world-renown beaches, and get up close to famous tourist attractions such as the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro.

“This whole trip was amazing and was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” continued Barahona. “I got to eat some great food, play the sport I love, tour through a country I love, and make friends along the way. I couldn’t have asked for more.”

Ron Smith, Director of USA Sports Tours & Events, compiled the team that consisted of members recognized as all-Americans, all-region and all-conference players. Barahona was named to the 2014 All-New England Collegiate Conference First Team after an outstanding season for the Mountaineers, his last in an SVC uniform after expending NCAA eligibility. He finished his Southern Vermont career as the team’s all-time kills leader with 1,080 and service aces leader with 89. He also ranks second for SVC in all-time blocks with 180 and digs with 668. Set to receive his diploma in May of 2015, Barahona just needs to finish one more semester of class work before completing graduation requirements.

“Following the completion of his collegiate career,” commented SVC Director of Athletics Michael McDonough, “it is gratifying to see Anthony have this opportunity to experience a people and a nation in such a personal way. It is another wonderful story for a former SVC athlete, and we’re very proud.”

Barahona is the third SVC volleyball player to play internationally in a 13-month period, following suit of former women Mountaineers Jessica Alvarez and Danielle Healis who both participated in a Netherlands tour in June of 2013 with USA Athletes International.
